CHARACTER

NAME: Klaus Hargreeves
CANON: The Umbrella Academy
CANON-POINT: Episode 7, dying at the rave

DOSSIER

HISTORY: Sobriety is super overrated.

WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S STRENGTHS?:
Klaus' biggest strength is survival, in just about every possible way. Not only is is more or less insinuated in the show that he doesn't stay dead when he dies (the above mentioned rave death, at least one overdose in the first five minutes of episode one, and the fact that Reginald seemed firmly convinced that Klaus was going to be able to pass on his information about the coming apocalypse despite being, you know, currently dead at the time that he shared it) but it takes a whole lot more to even get him to that place where he has to come back than it might the average person.

He's managed to survive more than a decade high out of his mind on one substance or another with his only real support system being his dead brother sitting on his shoulder, and it's lead to him having the uncanny ability to get himself into and out of trouble again with little to no outside help. Mostly because he's learned not to rely on anyone else caring enough about him to help, but we'll get more into that in a bit.

Klaus thrives in unpredictable situations where he lets instinct and creativity (as well as a keen understanding of the darker, seedier impulses of society and how to manipulate them in his favor) help him adapt quickly and relatively successfully. He blackmailed the scientist at Meritech into giving them information by injuring Five and himself and blaming the man, settled relatively easily into being suddenly thrust into the middle of the Vietnam war, and even managed to frustrate and unnerve his kidnappers when they tried to torture him into sharing information.

Which is another aspect to his survival abilities as well. Klaus has personally put himself through so many trials over the years that it takes a lot to break him. Physical pain barely phases him, and his own stunning lack of investment in his own personal worth tends to leave him with only a few very specific triggers that will actually get to him. And even then, if his motivation is strong enough, he won't even let those stop him for long.

WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S WEAKNESSES?:
In a word? Ghosts. They're to blame for his childhood trauma and coinciding claustrophobia regarding being locked overnight in a mausoleum, they're to blame for him turning to drugs and alcohol in a desperate bid to mute them, and those are the two big triggers that I mentioned above that can actually still get to him (that and Vietnam flashbacks, but those are a more recent issue and won't be as much of a problem until his memory returns).

In another word, drugs. His long running and fraught relationship with sobriety has lead to his siblings ultimately refusing to take him seriously about anything, to the point that they don't even notice when he gets kidnapped. Klaus is all too aware of his place in the family, in society even, and his own sense of value reflects this quite well. When it comes to helping himself, Klaus simply doesn't see any point in even trying. He doesn't view himself as worth the trouble.

He's tired of life. Not to the point of being actively suicidal, he's far too stubborn for that and killing himself would only vindicate dear old Daddy in the end, but when he realized that he'd died at the rave he was... relieved. Ready to just stop struggling and finally get some rest.

His self-control when it comes to indulging is practically nonexistent, and he'll even actively strive not to be taken seriously by making inappropriate comments if he feels a situation is too tense or too many eyes are currently on him for what he deems the wrong reason (aka any reason that doesn't have to do with his fashion).

He's terrible at confronting his own feelings honestly, even with people he loves and trusts that have already seen him at his worst (Ben, sometimes Diego). He's spent so long actively fighting to numb himself to everything troubling that he genuinely doesn't know how to say the words out loud. Even if actively prompted to share, it's difficult for him to believe that anyone will actually care about his problems. Despite Ben no doubt telling him differently for roughly a decade and Diego yelling at him outside the VFW.

In a purely mechanical sense, his campaign against sobriety has also lead to him having a dangerously limited understanding of his own abilities, at least according to Reginald, and if the comics are any sort of reference he has a lot of surprises in store for himself down the road once he gets sober again.

WHAT EVENTS OR CIRCUMSTANCES IN YOUR CHARACTER'S PAST HAVE IMPACTED THEM THE MOST?:
  • Being locked in the mausoleum overnight multiple times by Reginald in his childhood: Rather than get him used to the ghosts it only seemed to heighten his problems with the dead (and start him down the road to addiction), as well as giving him some measure of claustrophobia.

  • Time traveling back to 1968 and fighting in Vietnam: Mostly because this introduced him to Dave, who he fell in love with and helped inspire him to get sober once he made it back home again. But also because now on top of fighting addiction and ignoring ghosts he has to contend with PTSD from the war. Fun!

  • Dying at the rave: For one, he got a chance to confront some of his issues regarding Reginald directly by speaking with the man, but also because that whole trip to the afterlife seemed to give him a bit more direction and drive in the whole preventing the apocalypse thing, which up until that point he'd only sort of been along for the ride with.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOUR CHARACTER?:
At the start of the show (and thus the start of his time in Pines, since he's only going to remember that much when he first enters) Klaus' two motivations in life are staying numb and his family. The numbness, of course, was ostensibly to drown out the ghosts, but also a method of burying his emotional traumas deep enough that he never had to look at them directly.

On the other hand, whatever abysmal value Klaus assigned his own personal happiness, the love he harbors for his family (yes, even Luther) is another matter entirely. All of the effort we see him put into anything that doesn't have to do with scoring his next high is about helping his family, protecting his family, and he'd do just about anything for them. And for any small, minuscule indication that they would do the same.

Post returning from Vietnam we see something similar in his desire to get sober in order to conjure Dave's ghost to him, and ultimately this falls under the same motivation as the one regarding his family. Because more than the numbness, what Klaus craves most of all is intimacy, and for his own love to be returned. Honestly, just a simple hug would go a long way with this boy, but as evidenced by the way he leaned into Reginald's hand in that afterlife barbershop five seconds after having his head jerked roughly in one direction by the man, any touch at all will do.

WHAT IMPRESSION DO OTHERS TEND TO HAVE OF YOUR CHARACTER?:
A useless addict. There's not really much expanding I can do on this one. Even in the final few episodes when he'd been sobering up cold turkey on his own, he was accused of being high and left as "lookout" because nobody thought he'd be any sort of use in the final confrontation. He also gets accused of lying, often when he's being completely earnest and just generally gets disregarded, ignored, or forgotten whenever things get serious.

IN WHAT WAYS DOES THAT IMPRESSION DIFFER FROM WHO YOUR CHARACTER REALLY IS?:
To be fair, he cultivates a lot of people's inability to take him seriously on purpose, saying outrageous things to break up the tension or keep people from looking too closely at what might be bothering him, but that means that when he is trying to have an honest conversation with someone he gets dismissed just as quickly. Ultimately he's a hurt, lonely guy just trying his best and could probably use a depression nap or ten.

HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER HANDLE CRISIS OR ADVERSITY?:
Distraction, either via drugs or by making a distraction of himself. Once he gets back around to trying to be sober in Pines, distraction for himself will probably involve talking at someone whether they want to listen or not, or picking up (and probably just as quickly putting down) new hobbies as a way to keep himself busy.

If there's a crisis he'll be there to help (probably. depending entirely on if someone he cares about is involved but even then it wouldn't be too hard for someone to talk him around to help either way) in whatever impulsive and creative way comes to him at the time, all the while trying to lighten to mood overall with his demeanor.

WHICH 5 THINGS WILL YOUR CHARACTER REMEMBER UPON ARRIVAL, AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THEM?:
  1. His powers.
  2. His time spent in the mausoleum.
  3. His family.
  4. Reginald dying.
  5. Five coming back.
By limiting his memories to the first two episodes of the show more or less, he'll have the opportunity to slowly grow and change in the game as the later memories filter in. Considering this is the primary arc of his character in season one, sober Klaus in episode 7 loses some of its potency if no one actually witnesses this change in him for themselves.

This also involves him not immediately remembering that he always has Ben haunting him, but that's mostly so he has time to react to the town itself before having a panic attack over his ever present brother suddenly being really and truly gone.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU FEEL WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?:

Wayward Pines can rest easy now, they're finally in the presence of a Fashion Icon

SKILLS, ABILITIES, & PHYSICAL WEAKNESSES:

skills.
  • He can make anything look good.
  • Soldier things. But like, 1968 soldier things.
  • Slightly lapsed self-defense training.
  • An insane level of pain tolerance.
  • Just. Really phenomenal adaptability.
abilities.
  • Seeing and speaking with the dead.
  • Conjuring specific ghosts to himself.
  • Giving ghosts a temporary solid form.
  • Not staying dead???
If the comics are any sort of indication for where his powers will go as he gets a better handle on them, he might some day also be able to:
  • Communication through airwaves
  • Levitation/telekinesis
  • Possessing people
  • Time travel via dead bodies???
physical weaknesses.

He's no Luther, so his physical capabilities are pretty on par for an ordinary person, though perhaps a bit above average considering the circumstance of his youth and his recent 10 months spent in the middle of a war. He could definitely stand to put some meat on those bones but his stamina doesn't appear to be struggling too much despite his lifestyle choices in the past.

Really, his glaring weakness is his addiction and the eventual sickness he'll have to struggle through when he decides to get clean (again). He has problems with claustrophobia and gunfire thanks to his time spent in mausoleums and Vietnam as well, and if stressed enough can and will suffer a flashback from either of them.

False Memories
  • Jon ([personal profile] epistemological) met Klaus at a college party and took an embarrassingly long time to realize that Klaus wasn't actually a student. Now, Klaus couch surfs sometimes at Jon's place and tries to trick Jon into dressing better by hiding new clothes in his closet.
  • Georgie ([personal profile] alyein), Jon's wife, lets Klaus raid her closet, has regular nail painting sessions with him, and is just generally a wonderfully accepting presence in his life.
  • Peter ([personal profile] thieving) is the only fashionable bitch in this town that Klaus truly respects and they regularly swap/share clothes. Sometimes Klaus brings pot brownies to the library to show his appreciation for Peter's mere existence.
  • Jyn ([personal profile] realists) is that girl friend he goes out to the bar and drinks with for five hours straight while they bond over being raised by a robot. Eventually Cassian comes to pick her up and Klaus always inevitable winds up flirting with him.
  • Ikrie ([personal profile] snow_ghost) is a member of team "technically has a house but usually sleeps outside". They don't go out of their way to speak to each other, but the easy camaraderie is there nonetheless.
  • Alloran ([personal profile] takenalive) is Klaus' biological great uncle, or something like that, it's hard to be sure under the circumstances. He runs a plant nursery where Klaus gets most of his weed and Klaus sometimes decides to take naps among the plants.
  • Alistair ([personal profile] ostagars) was hired by one of Klaus' siblings to clear out the black mold that formed in Klaus' house while he was busy not being home. Klaus came home to find Alistair working and proceeded to chat his ear off and generally make a nuisance of himself.
